The European Heritage Campus Project with the National School Students, Clare Island

For the first two weeks of September, 2000, our school worked closely with the Clare Island Campus both in studying our nearby Cistercian Abbey as well as participating in the various Campus projects which were happening on the island.

This was a wonderful opportunity for my pupils to engage in local history in a practical way, thus fulfilling the 'hands on' approach recommended in our New Curriculum on Local History laid down by the Department of Education. It also helped them to gain a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the importance of the Abbey and its unique wall paintings.
