Exhibition and Symposium |
The Campus presented their work to both islanders and visitors on the final weekend. The exhibition took place in the island's Community Centre at the harbour, and the students managed to transform the large hall into a fascinating installation including architectural proposals, the island schoolchildren's work, many details of the wall-paintings and their technical conservation as well as the display of the web site. An unusually large turnout of islanders (including the schoolchildren and their parents) and Symposium goers visited the exhibition and were highly impressed. The Clare Island Symposium, which had as its theme the abbey and its wall-paintings, took place on the Saturday and Sunday (15th and 16th September). A number of talks were given by leading art historians, archaeologists and conservators, including Christophe Oldenbourg and Madeleine Katkov of the Campus team who synopsized their ten year conservation programme as well as leading a guided tour of the paintings in the abbey in the afternoon. Senior architects from Duchas (Ireland's Heritage Service) Willy Cumming and Paul MacMahon gave presentations and charted the possible ways forward for the site in the future. Mr. MacMahon, who is the architect in charge of the Clare Island Abbey was very interested in the work of the Campus and asked for the material to be sent to him so that various proposals could be perused for future reference. Those attending the Symposium travelled to the island from all parts of Ireland (despite the fuel strike). The complete programme of the Symposium The Symposium, a regular event organised by the Centre for Island Studies, was delighted to have the participation of the Campus this year. |
