The Centre for Island Studies was established in 1989 to research, preserve and promote Clare Island's natural and human heritage.
Since its founding, the Centre has expanded its field of interest and includes all Irish islands, in conjunction with the Federation of Irish Islands (Comhdhail na Oilean).
It has produced a number of publications, conducted small research projects and liaised closely with the Royal Irish Academy and the New Survey of Clare Island.
It has hosted one European Environmental Campus (1994) and two European Heritage Campuses (1996 and 2000) as well as two European Volunteer Schemes (1997-1998). It has links with a number of European islands.
